Illinois Citizen's Right to Carry Firearms

by Greg Miller

For many years citizens of Illinois have demanded the State provide a right to carry (CCW). To this day this right has been denied. Currently 48 other states have a carry permit available to various citizens who wish to carry a firearm. On the other hand, Illinois law does provide a way of transporting a firearm with a person who has a valid Firearms Owner Identification Card (FOID). To legally transport a firearm with a valid FOID the person must unload the weapon and place it in a container designed to hold a firearm and seal the container by zipping or fastening it. The person transporting the firearm may place it in any location inside their vehicle so long the ammunition is not attached to the firearm. The ammunition can be loaded into a magazine and can be stored near or with the firearm. So until Illinois passes a conceal carry law this method of transporting firearms is the best way to utilize a citizens right to carry.
